HARRISBURG, Pa.– Restoration professionals had their hands full at the start of the week as they fielded calls from people dealing with frozen, ruptured pipes flooding their homes. If a pipe bursts, it could seep through your drywall, and onto your carpet ruining furniture.
Now is the time to check your home for exposed pipes because a few bucks spent insulating them could save your thousands later.
A mobile home in Newberry Township is a total loss after the homeowner used a blow torch to try and thaw his frozen pipes Monday night. He and his family got out safely. His next door neighbor hasn’t had any issues with frozen pipes.
“No, my brother-in-law made sure of that one, Melissa Fenstermacher said.
The pipes under her home were wrapped with heat tape. While most of Fenstermacher neighbors were desperate for running water, she’s fine.
Amos Martin of Service 1st Restoration was stacked with water extraction jobs Tuesday.
“With water spraying inside the wall, this drywall is going to be removed, they will pull out any wet insulation,” Martin said, pointing at a smalls section of busted pipe that wasn’t insulated while being exposed to freezing temperatures.
Drywall can be saved if it’s treated within 36 hours, but most of the time carpet is ruined.
“Often times carpet isn’t salvaged anyway because it’s simply more cost-effective to replace it then to clean it if it’s been wet for an extended period of time,” Martin said.
A solid preventive measure is to look for pipes that are exposed in crawl spaces, and in your attic or basement, and then insulate them with tape, heating cable, or foam insulation.
If you have a pipe that has already ruptured, restoration professionals, like Service 1st will extract all of the water and attempt to salvage carpet and drywall. They will also treat everything for mold. The cost for this work on a residential home can range from ,500 to ,000.
