MIAMI VALLEY– As the Miami Valley begins to thaw out from the arctic freeze we have experienced earlier this week. It is causing a new problem to pop up, water main pipes are thawing out and bursting.Crews have already been called out to a number of businesses Wednesday morning to stop several of the leaks.Crews were called out to Trotwood shortly before 3:00 Wednesday morning after the pipes burst in a vacant building near a shopping plaza.Maintenance workers responded to shut off the water for the building and check out damage. We are told that the pipe burst inside the vacant store in the strip mall. The water was leaking for a while before it was shut off. Fortunately, a Trotwood officer was doing a patrol and saw water gushing from the back off the business and called in help. When firefighters arrived they opened the door to the office and the water came gushing out. It took them a little over an hour to shut off the water. This morning ABC 22/ FOX 45 spoke to a maintenance worker and he says he feared the pipes burst with the extremely cold weather we have seen. There was another problem at the Liberty Retirement Community on McEwen Road this morning. That pipe burst sending water everywhere. Fortunately, no one in the retirement home had to be a evacuated. In this extremely cold weather pipes to freeze at times, but there are a few things you can do to keep from water freezing up. First open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. When it is extremely cold outside let the water drip from the faucet, running water through the pipe even a trickle helps prevent pipes from freezing. As you head out the door this morning do not set the temperature is lower than 55 degrees.
