Drainage Problems Florida City
Call Us: 727-228-3350

Nineteen manatees were rescued early Tuesday morning from a storm drain at Satellite Beach, Florida. The manatees, also known as sea cows, were apparently trying to find their way to warmer waters when they became lodged in the drainage pipe, officials and local media said.

Reuters reports the rescue started mid-afternoon on Monday when Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission biologist, Ann Spellman, sounded the alarm, according to Florida Today.

Spellman told Florida Today that she had a hunch, which led city workers to check the 100-150-feet-long drain pipe.

Although experts were able to coax some manatees to swim out of the pipe, video footage of the event shows the pipe also being cut and water being vacuumed from the area before manatees were hoisted out with heavy machinery and carried to a nearby canal in slings.

Manatees, also known as sea cows, often leave the Indian River Lagoon during cold snaps for warmer waters in the canals. The ones that became stuck in the pipe probably followed ended up there by following each other, Reuters reports Spellman as saying.

The rescue, which included local police working alongside experts from SeaWorld, was completed at about 2:00 a.m. local time (0100 ET), Satellite Beach Fire Department Captain Jay Dragon said.
