Many people feel that the country is a peaceful, idyllic setting with no problems. That is not the case however. Predators are a big problem on the homestead. One primary predator in our area is the coyote. But a far more destructive predator is the domestic dog. Some people buy a puppy for their kids, but when the mastiff, pit bull, rottweiler puppy etc. grows up it can become destructive. At this point people will often decide that they don’t want the dog anymore. People bring their unwanted dogs out to the country and dump them on some back road, hoping that a rancher will adopt them. That is not what happens though, they will turn into destructive predators, causing major problems among livestock. The ranchers will likely respond by killing the dog just as they will coyotes. A good example is the two dead coyotes hung on the fence in this video. The same thing happens when people allow their dogs to roam at night, instead of putting them in a kennel. Dogs left out of a kennel and allowed to roam will cause problems for other animals such as sheep, goats, and even cattle. Ranchers do not wait until their precious livestock is in a dangerous position. They will with good reason eliminate the danger before losing livestock. Please be a responsible dog owner! Keep your dogs in a kennel or otherwise restrained at night. Do not allow them to cause problems for ranchers or homesteaders. Use a dog collar for your dog as a way for you to positively identify your dog in the event it gets loose. There are good invisible fence systems to contain dogs as well,
There are many methods of predator control. But remember, even though you may not personally homestead, many do. And you can do your part to exercise proper dog control. Many people find that building or purchasing a simple dog kennel helps tremendously.
