VIDEO SUBJECT: RAISING A GAS WATER HEATER ABOVE FLOOR LEVEL.

“Murray here from Champion Plumbing. We’re talking about raising your gas water heater….. code requires that a gas water heater be raised 18 inches off floor level if situated in a garage.

Why?….

If there are any volatile/inflammable liquids stored in the garage…. gasoline, kerosine etc…. the fumes hang low to the floor surface….

If the water heater is on the floor those fumes can enter the combustion chamber of the water heater….. BOOM!, THE WHOLE THING CAN EXPLODE!

That’s why it must be raised 18 inches minimum!

The newer design water heaters have what they call a ‘closed system’ Supposedly that will prevent such an accident from taking place.

Nevertheless, new design or not, the unit must be 18 inches or higher.

It is not required to raise an electric water heater…. It can be on the garage floor. It’s electric… no flame or gas involved.

If your gas water heater is installed outside in a shed, it is not required that it be raised. But do make sure to have at least a slab of 3 inches under it to prevent rain water and moisture causing rust around the base.
