VIDEO SUBJECT: WATER HEATER MAKING STRANGE NOISES.
“Murray here from Champion Plumbing.
Customers often ask me….. “WHY DO I HEAR STRANGE NOISES COMING OUT OF MY WATER HEATER!”….. It might be a groaning noise or a sizzling, whistling sound.
Don’t worry its not a ghost in the attic…. water heaters can make strange noises at times.
#1 reason: sediment build up in the tank. When that water heater begins to heat up, the tank does not expand uniformly because of all the gunk that’s built up around it inside.
Sediment has blocked the path of the water coming in and going out of the water heater. Also, as it heats up, it makes steam bubbles which force their way through the layer of sediment. So you start hearing those strange noises.
Don’t worry its not going to blow up…. you’ll find this happening in older water heaters.
What about the sizzling noise?…. condensation can build up between the outer shell and the tank and when the unit heats up you’ll hear the sizzling sound. The moisture is cooking off.
If you hear a boiling sound…. the water heater is over heating. Something wrong with the thermostat control. You need to call a plumber.
A leaking sound could be a sign of excess pressure build up. Again, call your plumber.
A whistling noise may be a sign that the water heater vent is partially blocked. Call a plumber and get the vent cleared.
